Description of the book - Rule Britannia 2Trading On The British Image

Bigger than foolscap or A4, this book is the size of an old-fashioned scrapbook, and is essentially a scrapbook of advertising images. Though the title - and subtitle, Trading On The British Image - suggests all are exploiting patriotism, Opie takes his selection from other aspects of the establishment as well. The text consists of a fairly brief, if authoritative introduction, and scattered notes in the main body of the book. Pages are alternately in colour and in black and white, and a gratifying number of the images are full page. The smallest are quite small, although in the case of magazine adverts this sometimes reflects their original printed size. Themes illustrated are Symbols of Britain (John Bull, Britannia and the lion), Emblems of the Sovereign (crowns, the royal arms etc), The Royal Presence (pictures of monarchs), Running Up The Flag, Britain's Fighting Forces, Great British Institutions (Scouts, teachers, judges, policemen etc), Upstairs Downstairs (images of servants in ecstacies over the product), The British Abroad (the colonies, tiger hunting out in In-dee-yah, polar explorers and so on), Whatever The Weather, The British At Play (sport), Leisure Time Pursuits (motoring and so on), and Daily Sustenance, a category so broad that all pretence of a patriotic theme breaks down. Dates range from 1850 to 1950, but the bulk are from the years between 1890 and 1939. An excellent pictorial resource for designers, collectors, interior decorators and graphic artists. You could even buy a cheap one and razor out the best ads for decor.
